Grade 304 stainless steel is the most versatile and the most widely used of all stainless steels. It can withstand corrosion that can be caused by various chemicals found in fruits meat and milk. It is subject to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments and to stress corrosion cracking above about 60 c. 870 c 1600 f.

Maximum service temperature in air. Type 304 grade stainless steel is also found in sinks tabletops coffee pots refrigerators stoves utensils and other cooking appliances. Type 304 is the most widely used and versatile of the stainless steel grades. 304 stainless steel sheet is the most popular and economical of the stainless steels.

925 c 1700 f. It is considered resistant to pitting corrosion in water with up to about 400 mg l chlorides at ambient temperatures reducing to about 150 mg l at 60 c. 304 stainless sheet may become slightly magnetic when worked and is not heat treatable. Type 304 stainless steel is an austenitic grade that can be severely deep drawn.

Type 304 stainless steel is not magnetic but may be slightly magnetic after cold working. It is also known as 18 8 18 chromium 8 nickel. 304 stainless sheet offers good corrosion resistance to many chemical corrodents as well as industrial atmospheres and marine environments. Type 304l is the low carbon version of 304.

It is used in heavy gauge components for improved weldability. This property has resulted in 304 being the dominant grade used in applications like sinks and saucepans.
