Southern Gutters Fraser Island

Leaving at approx 6am the outside trips weather permitting run outside fraser island either to the north through break sea spit off sandy cape or through the wide bay bar at the southern end of the island.

Further north garrys anchorage is another narrow marked channel positioned between fraser and stewart island just north of figtree creek. Thirty miles northwest of hervey bay is a spot called southern gutters which features 25 meter to 60 meter holes home to a number of schools of fish. Large patches of coral reef are found here like the sandy cape shoals. Further north and hugging the west coast of fraser island browns gutter is a marked narrow channel running north south that allows anchorage close to the island.

For the first time this summer the southern and northern gutters got a touch up producing mixed catches of reef fish such as cod railway perch blackall parrot and. The southern gutters are approx 30 nautical miles north west of hervey bay and half way between the top of fraser island and bundaberg. We are still waiting for the bulk numbers of fish to move into the bay and the best reports have come from wider and deeper grounds like the southern gutters roonies and outside of fraser island. Depths range from 25 m on the outer edges to 60m in the holes.
